     Is this fund for you?

Magnum Multicap Fund (MMF) is the latest addition to the ever-burgeoning list of schemes from the SBI Mutual Fund. The scheme falls in the segment of flexicap funds i.e. the ones which invest in stocks across market capitalisations (large, mid and small caps). Theoretically, funds with such a fluid investment style are best equipped to capitalise on opportunities across market segments. A bull run in stocks from the mid cap segment should be credited for the launch of a number of flexi cap funds in the recent past.

Equity-oriented funds from SBI Mutual Fund have emerged as top performers across categories over the last 2 years. However these funds have a history of taking sectoral bets, holding concentrated stock holdings and dabbling in stocks from the mid cap segment.

Another factor to be considered is the strong mid cap flavour in most schemes from the fund house. Given that Magnum's best performing funds are from the mid cap segment, it remains to be seen how a pre-dominantly (atleast 50% of the corpus) large cap fund like MMF will fare in terms of performance.

With a fluid investment style and possibility of substantial (upto 50%) holdings in the mid and small cap segments, MMF is likely to be a high risk - high return investment proposition. Investors keen on investing in the flexicap funds segment can consider adding to their portfolios some of the existing funds with proven track records.

     Portfolio Strategy

MMF will invest in stocks across market capitalisations i.e. large caps, mid caps and small caps. The fund has defined large cap stocks as those with a market capitalisation atleast equal to that of the least capitalised stock in the S&P CNX Nifty. The fund will at any point in time have atleast 50% of its corpus invested in stocks of this variety; the upper limit has been capped at 90%.

Market Capitalisation Minimum Allocation Maximum Allocation
    Large cap 50% 90%
    Mid cap 10% 40%
    Small cap 0% 10%

MMF has determined a range of 10%-40% for investments in the mid cap segment; while the fund can hold a maximum of 10% of its assets in small cap stocks.

In terms of allocation across various asset classes, MMF is mandated to invest 70%-100% of its assets in equities and equity related instruments. The fund can invest upto 30% of its assets in fixed/floating rate debt instruments and money market instruments.

     Fund Manager Profile

Mr. Sandip Sabharwal, is the Assistant Vice President and Head of Equity. He is a Chemical Engineer from IIT-Delhi and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM-Bangalore. Mr. Sabharwal has been associated with SBI Mutual Fund since 1995; he worked as a research analyst for the first three years where he covered a number of sectors and then moved to fund management. Mr. Sabharwal manages Magnum Contra and Magnum Global among other funds.

     Outlook

Impressive performances by equity-oriented funds from the SBI Mutual Fund stable notwithstanding, one must note that the same has coincided with a bull run in the equity markets; hence their performance during a bear phase remains to be tested.

We believe MMF will be a high risk - high return investment proposition. Investors with a flair for high risk investment avenues can consider adding the fund to their portfolios.
