About HDFC Equity Fund

HDFC Equity Fund is one of the most sought after funds in the Indian mutual fund industry. It has a track-record that spans over two decades and a fund manager who has been at the helm over this entire period.  Ace fund manager, Mr Prashant Jain is the man who has been driving growth for this scheme.

HDFC Equity Fund invests predominantly in growth companies that are expected to outperform other peers in the industry. Such companies should enjoy distinct competitive advantages and have superior financial strengths. To manage risk, the fund manager looks to diversify the portfolio across sectors and market capitalisation.

HDFC Equity Fund is mandated to invest upto 80%-100% of its assets in equities and upto 20% in debt and money market instruments (including floating rate debt instruments). The fund largely follows a blend of growth and value style of investing and does not churn its portfolio often. It prefers to remain fully invested into equities and does not take any aggressive cash calls.

HDFC Equity Fund has a flexi-cap style mandate that allows it to benefit from opportunities across market caps. While it maintains an allocation of over 95% to equity, about 75%-85% is invested in large-caps and 15%-25% is invested in mid-caps. Given its large corpus, the fund does not churn its portfolio often and follows a buy and hold strategy. The fund manager sticks to his conviction, focussing on long term gains, even if it means that returns may suffer over the short-term. While HDFC Equity Fund holds large number of stocks, the allocation is significantly skewed to the top holdings.
