Are you utilising any of the numerous apps for financial transactions?

With a host of payment e-wallets such as PayTM, MobiKwik, Airtel Money, Citrus Pay etc, almost every bank has launched a mobile application (app) for financial transactions. Some of these banking apps are based on NPCI's (National Payments Corporation of India) Unified Payments Interface (UPI), such as Axis Pay from Axis Bank, SBI Pay from SBI, and the list can go on and on.

Several private players, too, have launched apps that enable transactions using UPI, such as PhonePe, BHIM UPI App, among others. The latest one based on the UPI framework is Google’s Tez.

Tez is the latest digital payment app from Google. You can install the app on android phones or iPhones. As it uses the UPI, Tez works with your existing bank account, which means your money is safe with your bank and you’ll continue to earn interest. There’s no need to open a separate account or worry about reloading wallets. Tez works with all banks in India that supports the UPI. As with all other apps, you’ll need an internet connection.

The setup is simple:

  1. Download Tez from either Google Play or the App Store. It's free! For Android devices, your phone must run on Kitkat (4.4) or higher. While Apple devices require iOS 8.2 or later.

  2. Set your Google PIN or screen lock. This will keep your account safe from unauthorised users and prevent accidental transactions.

  3. Link your bank account. Link your existing bank account to Tez in a few taps. It’s secure and free to send money. You might need to give Tez permission to send a verification SMS to your bank. If you have an existing UPI PIN, you will be asked to enter it. If you don't have a UPI PIN, you will need to enter your debit card information.

Start sending money from your linked bank account to friends across the country or people nearby. Very soon, Google plans to enhance the features of Tez by enabling payments through debit and credit cards and setting auto-debt or reminders for recurring bills such as DTH.

Benefits of using Tez for all your payment needs:

  • Pay and receive money directly from your linked bank accounts – All bank accounts that are UPI enabled can be linked. Simply link your accounts to Tez over UPI and instantly transfer money from bank to bank.

  • Pay your friends and family anywhere, anytime – You can pay or receive money from anyone who has the Tez App or any other UPI supported app by simply selecting them from your contacts list or by entering their UPI ID. Under 'Payments', tap a contact. If you don’t see the account/person you want to transfer funds to, tap New and search for them by name, phone number, account number, or UPI ID. When the money has been sent, you’ll get a notification. You'll also receive an SMS from your bank with the debited amount.

  • Transfer money to anyone nearby - Use Tez for daily transactions or even larger transfers easily. With Tez’s Cash Mode, you can instantly send or receive payments to anyone in the same vicinity who has the Tez app, without sharing details like your phone number or bank account. Tez uses audio pairing to help you connect with nearby users. You’ll need to let Tez use your microphone. You can also ask the person to pull up their QR code to scan it.

Along with the ease of transactions, Google adds other features and benefits to attract users:

  • Multiple Languages – Tez works with a majority of smartphones, so you can pay or get paid by almost anyone, anywhere in India. Tez offers language support for English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.

  • Get Rewarded – Get Tez Scratch Cards or play the Lucky Sundays Draw in the app and become eligible to win cash prices every week.

  • Multiple layers of security from your bank, UPI, and Google – Your money is secure with ‘Tez Shield’, a security software that works 24/7 to help detect fraud, prevent hacking, and verify your identity. Each transaction is secured with your UPI PIN and the app is secured with a Google PIN or fingerprint.

Daily and monthly limits exist on how much money you can send or receive using Tez. Limits can differ for Tez, the UPI, and your bank.

You may reach a daily limit if:

  • You try to send more than Rs 1 lakh in one day across all UPI apps.
  • You try to send money more than 20 times in one day across all UPI apps.

In case this happens, you will need to wait until the next day to transfer more money.

Your bank might have its own limits on how much you can send or receive. Contact your bank for more information. To protect against fraud, some transactions might get flagged for further review. If you’re having trouble making a transaction and you have not reached the limit, contact Tez support for help.

UPI-based apps have definitely introduced ease and convenience in monetary transactions. Now, you no longer have to refill your e-wallets, instead transact through these apps and keep earning interest on your money parked in savings account. It is a hassle-free way to send and receive money.

So, go ahead and download the UPI app of your choice, become tech savvy with your smartphone in handling your personal finances and go cashless.
