How to invest your RIB maturity proceeds?

A lot of NRIs (non resident Indians) have been scanning through newspapers and investment reports or, if they have access one, contacting financial planners for advice on investing in India. The reason for this surge in interest is that about US$ 5.5 bn (Rs 25,000 crores) is said to flow back to the NRIs as maturity proceeds of Resurgent India Bonds (RIBs). In view of the volatility that has engulfed both the debt and equity markets, it is important that NRIs do their home work before deciding to invest in India.

Here is a checklist that will help you make the most of your money

  1. Define the purpose of investment and look out for investment opportunities that suit the purpose (for example, if you are looking at retiring in say 3 years time, then income funds are a better option - equities are a no!).

  2. If you get little time to do your own home work on investing, get yourself an investment advisor. You have the option for both fee based as well as transaction based services. Look out for an advisor who will also help you evaluate your portfolio from time to time.

  3. Since you are likely to be outside of India for considerable periods of time, the better option is to select a financial services provider who will help you in executing the transactions as well.

  4. Be aware of the regulatory guidelines and tax implications.

  5. Ensure your service provider gives you access to an online tracking facility that helps you track not only stocks or mutual funds, but also all your incomes, expenditures assets and liabilities. Also, ensure that you have 24*7 access to your portfolio.
