Today life is quite busy and fast. Each one of us engages in an economic activity and works hard to make a living. But then we all vie for a break from our daily routine and go on a holiday. Taking a holiday once in a while brings back the lost energy and helps us relax and rejuvenate. However, holiday plans are often put on the back burner due to the costs involved.

Through this article, PersonalFN has listed down some points which can help you to take a vacation that fits into your budget and does not burn a huge hole in your pocket.

  • Choose an affordable mode of transport

While you plan a holiday, airfares can be one of your major costs especially if you intend travelling abroad. However, booking in advance can help you get cheaper air fare.

If you are thinking of holidaying domestically, road or rail transport are cheaper modes. But here too lookout for what fits into your budget. Also don’t rule out airways; because it is possible that you may get a good deal if you book in advance. It is necessary that you check all the travelling options available before booking. There are several websites that let you compare prices. If possible, keep your dates and timings flexible as some times, travelling a day prior or later can lower your costs noticeably.

  • Select reasonable accommodations

Another thing that can largely affect your holiday budget is the hotel cost. During peak seasons, hotels raise their room rents significantly. Hence, consider taking a holiday during off-season times so as to reduce your accommodation expenses. Also, instead of hotels you can stay in apartments or holiday homes that are often relatively cheaper. Wherever you plan to book your stay, request them to lower the accommodation costs, as there is no harm in trying.

Remember that some areas in a city / town are more expensive than others. If possible, avoid staying in such areas as that would increase your vacation expenses by a considerable sum.

  • Lower your food expenses

As you may have experienced, eating out has become rather expensive. Hence, you need to be careful where you step-in to eat. If you are staying in an apartment furnished with kitchen amenities, consider cooking some meals instead of eating in restaurants all the time. Also, while making your hotel / apartment reservations, you must check if a meals included package is turning out to be more cost effective. You may also consider taking some food along with you to the destination in case the food there don’t fit into your budget and doesn’t suit your palate. However, if you are travelling abroad be careful; as some countries don’t allow individuals to carry certain kinds of food items.

  • Opt for commutation and sightseeing options that goes well with you

When on a holiday while you travel and explore the place, first assess the modes of conveyance available. Also for sightseeing look for options being made available to tourists by the respective Government or even private tour operators and see what best fits into your budget rather than getting swayed by swanking deals. Sometimes talking to locals and exploring yourself, can help you gauge the pulse and character of the place better. So even walk down if the place you intend to explore is nearby. If the area you want to explore is at quite a distance, don’t shy away from even making use of public transport - that’s an experience in itself.

Some holiday destinations offer attractive adventure activities, but before you opt for them please check on the charges; because at some destinations, adventure activities are very highly priced. Hence, you can give them a miss and enjoy all the other affordable things. It would be prudent to discuss the things that should not be missed with friends / relatives who have already been to the destination or travel agents, in case you are booking through them.

  • Minimise your shopping expenditure

If you don’t want to spend extravagantly on a vacation, then make sure you don’t spend on shopping or follow a strict budget for the same. A person’s mind is quite relaxed when on a holiday. But don’t let that get you carried away into purchasing things and swiping your credit card. But of course you can always buy a couple of souvenirs which appeal you.

PersonalFN is of the view that planning a vacation in advance can help you reduce costs significantly. Also, keep in mind that it is prudent to involve your family when planning a holiday as that will give you their opinions and expectations. It will also help them understand the budget set for the vacation and stop them from spending money frivolously.

If the holiday destination decided by you is coming out to be costly during the time you want to travel, then you should choose a less expensive place for a vacation or postpone your trip. Also, remember that, although taking a loan for going on a holiday might give you instant gratification, it can be harmful for your financial health in the long run.
